Governor Andrew Cuomo will support legislation to legalize marijuana if the State Democratic Party makes it part of their agenda, per The New York Post. In April, Cuomo announced that he was open to legalizing weed after renouncing it for years as a “gateway drug.” He stated that the “facts have changed” regarding the controversial substance.
Weed has been decriminalized in New York State since 1977 and in 2014 Mayor Bill De Blasio ordered the NYPD to cease arrests for small possession (including when the substance was in public view). The Governor had years to make the bold and yet obvious move to push for legislation legalizing marijuana. 9 states and the District of Columbia have approved recreational use. Now with 61% of Americans supporting legalization, Cuomo finally makes his weed play.
