“Pat the Berner” is a Bay Area resident who is a fervent supporter of Bernie Sanders. He also runs the neo-liberal journalist parody Twitter account Peter Douche and has become an unintentionally laughable critic of Andrew Yang and his supporters known as the #YangGang on social media.
As far I can tell, it all began on Saturday when Pat the Berner put out a link to a presidential straw poll:
#Bernie2020 Has Bernie ever lost a straw poll? Doubt it. Anytime people choose to vote themselves, instead of being called on their landlines during dinner, Bernie crushes. Go vote!https://t.co/nfmqzS2QsG— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 4, 2019
UBI advocate and Andrew Yang supporter Scott Santens saw the tweet and promptly retweeted it with comment, urging Yang supporters to vote for Yang in the poll:
The #YangGang rushed to vote in the poll and demonstrated that there actually is a straw poll Bernie Sanders hasn't won:
Well, this seems to have enraged Pat the Berner, who then called out the #YangGang:
Any Yangsters want to waste my time and get a quick block go for it. I swear your whole online campaign feels like some Jacob Wohl astroturfing to create a Bernie split that doesn't exist.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
#YangGang were quick to come to Andrew Yang's defense, unafraid of Pat’s incredibly weak and non-scary threat to block all Yang supporters who confronted him:
Most people think its astroturf but it's a real movement. His name recognition is low but the people who have heard of him like him. He made the debate stage before most of the field based on individual donors. He met the polling qualification after. Same path as Bernie in 2016. pic.twitter.com/qNxSNkf7qt— Joseph Patrick (@JoeyGDNBoss) May 5, 2019
I voted for Bernie in 2016, because he was speaking to problems that effect me. Yang speaks to those more accurately and has better solutions. #Yang2020— Wandering 🐉 YangGang2020 🐉 (@Unicorn36902) May 5, 2019
Real Live support. Support I provided for Bernie last go round but now I have a candidate I am even more passionate about. This is no astro-turfing Pat. The same thing was claimed of Bernie in 2016, be fair, be reasonable. Please.— FromTheShadows (@FromTheShadow11) May 5, 2019
Pat did engage some Yang supporters, giving his reasons (lies) for why he didn't like Andrew Yang:
Fwiw Yang is a Bernie fan. They should be allies, not adversaries.— Benjamin Friedman (@BenjaminFried19) May 5, 2019
Spread the word. The Yang gang is divisive af.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
Personally, he's not the worst, but his online campaign is awful.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
Really? I like his campaign. Not all of his supporters are great, obviously, but I like Yang and the people who work for him in an official capacity.— Benjamin Friedman (@BenjaminFried19) May 5, 2019
They're absurdly obnoxious and becoming universally hated online.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
Man it is wild to hear some of the same stuff Hillary supporters were saying against Bernie supporters in 2015-2016 coming from the Bernie 2020 camp. I knew I was on the right team with Bernie 2016 and I know I’m on the right team now.— Nate @SoCalYangGang (@YangGangSoCal) May 5, 2019
When Pat says Yang supporters are "universally hated online" is he referring to the feelings of individuals in the echo chamber of Bernie supporters he inhabits?
I support Yang. I realize there’s a large contingent of online activity that has cast his base in a certain light, but there are real ppl behind him who are looking for a way forward.— nickcullen (@nelluckcin) May 5, 2019
The vast majority of his support online simultaneously says they're Bernie allies, while tearing Bernie down, meanwhile offering libertarian mumbojumbo. Also at least half are newly created accounts with few followers. Pass.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
That hasn't at all been my experience. Join the Yang 2020 Facebook group, it's a wonderful bunch. I donated to Bernie many times last cycle, and even looked into and donated to many of the candidates he endorsed down ballot. There's a lot of overlap between their ideals.— Kodiak Sauer (@KodiakSauer) May 5, 2019
Yes there is some overlap. So if Yang, with less than 1% of the vote and can't possibly win, thinks this online presence of attacking Berners is going to help his cause, he's delusional.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
Bernie supporters drew the same criticism in 2016 because there were some overzealous supporters online. Yang’s proportion of meme-slinging bros might be larger than Bernie’s was, but he can’t exactly control that...— nickcullen (@nelluckcin) May 5, 2019
His policies are libertarian and I would never support him. That aside, I am not against some of his policies, but his overall presence online is making the entire internet block the yang gang.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
I get it. I suppose the reason I replied (I rarely tweet) is that I wanted to try to offer some ballast against the mischaracterization of Yang’s support. I didn’t like it as a Bernie supporter; I wish ppl would look a little further with Yang.— nickcullen (@nelluckcin) May 5, 2019
The thing is, it's really about Yang supporters attacking Bernie supporters. It's the least progressive thing they can do. I know there are hypothetically plenty of nice Yang supporters.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 5, 2019
What are you? Trump? "And some I assume are good people" Yes, Yang and Bernie supporters shouldn't diss the other candidate or each other. You are acting no different than what you protest against.— David Goodwin (@david_m_goodwin) May 5, 2019
As of Monday Yang supporters are still giving Pat the Berner shit and Pat continues to ironically use the same tactics that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign used to discredit Bernie Sanders:
Totally agree, so let's elect the most progressive candidate! You can't guarantee jobs that dont exist, and to keep slave labor around for the sake of work to do is insanity. Join the revolution of reason! #Yang2020 #YangGang #HumanityFirst #Math— Cory Washburn (@KriticalCory) May 6, 2019
Yang can't win and he's progressive in some ways but also libertarian AF. Hard pass and if 50 Yangsters come here chiming in I'll block every last mfer. Don't waste my time with his crap.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 6, 2019
Avoiding the truth doesn't make it less real. Saying Yang can't win is not only false but an insult to progress. I loved Bernie but Yang showed me how antiquated his policy is for today's real problems. UBI is the best possible path forward for more reasons than just automation.— Cory Washburn (@KriticalCory) May 6, 2019
And her it comes. A fleet of Yang folks demanding debate over a libertarian version of UBI. No means no. Not interested in the least.— Pat the Berner🌹 (@PatTheBerner) May 6, 2019
It’s almost as if Pat the Berner is afraid of the #YangGang, Andrew Yang’s powerful message, or maybe he’s just on edge because of the massive decline in Bernie’s poll numbers? Whatever his reason for having an emotional breakdown on Twitter, Pat the Berner now knows that the #YangGang is very much real, and it will not let lies and innuendo be cast upon Andrew Yang and his supporters without a quick and devastating response.
To sum it up nicely:
