My short response to the cover story "What Democrats Get Wrong About Immigration Policy" from In These Times magazine’s April 2019 issue which calls for open borders:
The United States of America can’t take care of the world.
Global labor unity is a great ideal, but countries should be focused on/are best positioned at fixing local problems in their nation-state — not fixing the world. And no borders would undermine and disrupt the ability of individual states to achieve harmony and prosperity. In many ways, you would just be allowing people suffering regional economic problems to move from one place to another without any certain positive outcome resulting for these people.
Life in America is not a panacea for peoples’ struggles, and illegal immigrants are often exploited; forced into prostitution, gangs, sweatshops, and underpaid/not paid for farm work.
There is a reason globalist extremists like the Koch brothers support open borders — it makes it harder to organize workers at the local level and gives more control to the already wealthy/powerful. Progressives shouldn’t support bad ideas that attempt to oversimplify complex issues with purist notions of what equality means, and which play directly into right-wing globalist dreams that could turn into a real-life nightmare for many American workers.
